The Kranshoek and the Perdekop walking trails situated in the Harkerville portion of the Kruisfontein State Forestry area is host to possibly the most beautiful and untouched coastal areas and natural forests in South Africa where there is no development with only footprints remaining from intrepid adventurers looking to discover the spirit and essence of Africa in its purest form.

The trails traverse natural untouched indigenous forest, cultivated plantations and endemic coastal fynbos vegetation types which are host to a very interesting but diverse and exciting species array of birds (fynbos endemics are ever present), trees, plants and elusive yet sometimes observed mammals or more appropriately their signatures of their presence. Although not seen very regularly signs will be observed of the presence of bushpigs, caracal, possibly leopard spoor, baboons and vervet monkeys.

The topography of the area comprises long series of terraces which run from east to west, stepped from the coastal region all the way up into the heights of the Outeniqua Mountains. A narrow litoral zone comprising sand and coastal rock outcrops form the foundation of the coastal belt which reaches heights of up to 350m. The next belt begins approximately 15km inland and attains a height of up to 600m. Thereafter the heights of the Outeniqua mountains are attained at approximately 1200m. Rainfall occurs throughout the year with most rainfall occurring between September and April with average rainfall of between 700 and 800mm per year.
