The Goukamma Marine Protected Area, covering an area of 2500ha, was proclaimed in July 1990, when new regulations were introduced preventing the removal of marine organisms and fish of any kind. The Marine Protected area extends 14km along the coastline as well as extending 1,8km out to sea. The Marine Protected area helps to link conservation with the development of tourism and is the Marine equivalent of a National Park.

The reserve has some of the most densely vegetated dunes in South Africa and is home to the Goukamma River and the Groenvlei Lake which is fed by an underwater spring and has no outlet to the sea. The vegetation contains a mixture of coastal fynbos together with dense concentrations of milkwood, yellowwood and candlewood trees as well as Erica fynbos which blooms in September and October.

The reserve is home to a wide variety of mammals including antelope, vervet monkeys, mongoose and otters. Birdlife is prolific with over 200-species represented including the iconic African Fish Eagle, the rare African Black Oystercatcher and the endangered African Penguin which frequents the reserves shores. Bottlenosed and humpback dolphins are frequently seen between July and December as well as Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales

Due to the magnificence and position of Goukamma Nature & Marine Protected Area along the Garden Route, the African Edu-Eco Wizard team has devised a passive, guided Experiential Canoeing Eco-Adventure on the Goukamma River. We not only focus on the canoeing aspect of the adventure but also the interpretative value of the surrounding vegetation, the marine environment, the regional history and birds that abound.

Groups of between 6 and 12 people can be accommodated. Our lead guides are very highly qualified, survivors in their own right, educators and teachers who love sharing and teaching what they know. Herewith are details of the canoeing program which can be enjoyed either in the early to mid-morning or mid-late afternoon depending on your availability.
